Orzei of Varekan – Dwarven Berserker
The son of a merchant from the opulent and peaceful Dwarven city of Varekan, the only coastal city of the Dwarves. Orzei as a child was enamoured by the history of his people more than anything, and was especially drawn to the sagas of the Drow and their turbulent relationship with his people. This obsession grew into fanaticism, as Orzei adopted an identity far removed from his parents, forsaking any notion of being a peddler of trinkets and cheap wares. His people had been wronged, and those who wronged them still stirred, breathed and plotted only over the border away from them. It would only take one powerful effort from the Drow to invade his people again, and leave the lands of the Dwarves in ruin.
Driven by a hatred and bloodlust against the Drow, Orzei joined a caravan to the outpost of Zander’s Peril in the heart of darkness of Lo Fuin’s swamps upon the surface. There, he was given ample opportunity to thin the numbers of his sworn enemy, protecting scholarly expeditions into the mysterious swamps, though always drawing first blood against any Drow encounter. He had developed a sixth sense for their ways, how they traversed the swamps, where they hid for ambushes. Often he could sniff them out before they could even realise they were made, with no time to react before his axe cleaved their skulls. Noting this peculiar bloodlust, one scholar in the WEHL communicated with the command council at Zander’s Peril, making the recommendation to have Orzei removed from the fortress under the belief that he was likely inciting tension with the local Drow populace, as his indiscriminate killings were also taking the lives of the previously neutral Glanbelite Drow.
Agreeing to the recommendation, the council were happy to relinquish his position should the WEHL offer him gainful employment in its stead. Reluctantly, the WEHL agreed and Orzei was told his services were no longer needed, with the Drow seemingly forsaking surface activity after his decade of rampaging against them. With his battle hardened hatred and penchant for battle, his services would be better suited in service to the WEHL, battling creatures that pose a direct threat to his homeland, and the homeland of all fair folk of Tharador. Seeing the honour in such a plight, Orzei gladly accepted his new charge.
