Swordsman of the Sea - Ignacio Reyes

from $3.00

“Born in Sudd Tohst, raised in Brightstone and inducted into the Hexhunters after a childhood of rigorous and bloody training. Ignacio possesses the remarkable agility and fortitude Hexhunters are known for, but with a cool air of charisma and charm that sets him apart from his brethren. It was fortune that brought him to Baradin, who sought for a monster hunter to join his voyage, protecting his ship from the perils of the creatures that dwell in the deep in their search for the Damned Galleon.

Most are confused to hear a northern accent from the sun-kissed man of the south when he first waggles his tongue. Indeed, Ignacio’s childhood was anything but standard, having been born in the savannah of Sudd Tohst, moving to the icy kingdom of Brightstone in Tharador’s far north when he was young. His father, a sorcerer in the employ of a local lord in Sudd Tohst was forced to flee during the Sultan’s conquests when Ignacio was a child. With little places to flee in Sudd Tohst, they settled in Brightstone to live among his mother’s family. Shortly after, Ignacio began showing the early signs of arcane acuity, something that often worried his father, for Minera’s Breath in Brightstone was ill-tolerated compared to the south, save for handfuls of court sorcerers and licensed practitioners, who still were treated like dirt for their vocations, no matter how prestigious their place might be.

It didn’t take long for his powers to manifest themselves in public, drawing ire and hate from the locals who saw the foreign child as an abomination, demanding his exile or death. With little other option, Ignacio’s father did the one thing he could to try keep his child’s life, and stop him from being banished from their home: he was given to the Hexhunters. An ancient order of spellswords who imbued themselves with arcane crystals to harness aspects of Minera’s Breath and empower their bodies. Owing to his natural magical aptitude, Ignacio was able to take on a great deal of these, with minimal cost to his body or mind. Still, he realised soon after finishing his training that the life of a monster hunter was not for him, nor the strict codes and doctrines the Hexhunters bound themselves to. His father protested, but Ignacio held little warmth for a man who sold him into glorified slavery.

Thus he left, travelling first to the Katarn Sea where he worked as a shiphand across many vessels for several years, doing his best to keep his talents as a Hexhunter a secret. Yet the Katarn Sea is a perilous place, and it was inevitable that he would be beset by danger, having to wrangle with a beast of the deep sea that had laid siege to his vessel, ultimately slaying the beast in an awe inspiring, dazzling display. Covered in the beast’s entrails and guts, he was branded a hero, yet word of the courageous act would quickly reach the Hexhunters who would send for him, so he could no longer keep his incognito identity. Fortunately, a Dwarf at the docks of Rykdom found him first, having heard the tall tales of his battle with the beast. He was a captain, Baradin, of the Gilded Seahorse. He needed a man of Ignacio’s talents upon his own vessel, to keep the creatures of the depths at bay, or cut them to ribbons when they dare lay a tentacle upon the hull of his ship.

Ignacio thus accepted, yet became shocked to learn the crew he had joined were little more than pirates, pilfering gold and other ill-gotten gains from across the seas. However, he knew that among kind like theirs, he might be safest. It was still a rarity for him to use his powers, but just about every man and lady upon the Gilded Seahorse had seen him do it at least once, and for that, they feared him. A darkness takes Ignacio anytime the crystals hum with violet light beneath his skin, and it seems as though another man takes his place until he has finished spilling blood.”
